Giliane Granat knows what she wants. Without hesitation, she chose her specialization, make-up consulting. “A very theoretical specialization, but one which leads to concrete things” she tells us. The theory part is in the communication and sales classes: the question of the customer’s real or suggested need, the aptitude to adapt to what the customer says and to use the appropriate commercial terms.
It was an exciting subject, with very good instructors, and a playful approach thanks to sketches and scenarios. The theory also deals with everything to do with morphopsychology: “I was one of the rare students to be really interested in the subject, and I have to say that it is amazingly useful to me in my current profession. The idea is to understand a customer’s expectations and personality through the form of her face, her expressions and the physical attitude in general.
Today, I observe the people I approach in my role as a consultant make-up artist a lot, and I am more skilled at guessing what they desire. It’s a major plus in my work in Sephora.” Moreover, Giliane is already a professional, she has a part-time contract with the cosmetics retailer as she continues her studies. After three unpaid trainee placements, she was hired following the departure of her manager.
Today, she has the status of color consultant. Her role ? To find the products that suit the desires, the personality and the physique of a client through flash make-ups. “There is a lot of human contact. I like taking the time to get to know the person to be able to target her needs. In this way I don’t fake it and I create customer loyalty which is not something you can buy.” Then she adds: “the good thing in this profession is also the diversity of skin types. On average, I make-up one person every half hour, and I see a lot of people pass by and they are all very different.” Giliane is very motivated, she is also working in discothèques doing face painting and body painting, as well as for marriages along with her boyfriend who is in the same profession as her.
As for make-up consulting, she has already thought of what’s coming next in her career: “I’m giving myself a few years as a make-up artist in retail to really get to know the products, then I will become a technical salesperson and a trainer for a big brand.” A career plan already worked out for this young girl, a student at the ITM and already active in the professional world.
