BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST  / Student curriculum

ITM Paris: Professional make-up artist school - course curriculum, artistic makeup

Studying at the ITM, means making a choice to exert creative and spectacular professions. It also means giving oneself the means to master these professions. Anyone can mechanically apply the “recipes” they learn. Using your eye and your imagination to bring a make-up to life on stage, on screen or in photo, that is the pedagogical path proposed by the ITM.

This 2 or 3 year training course prepares the students holding a minimum of a baccalaureate or equivalent for the job of professional make-up artist for cinema, fashion, television or special effects. But also for all the performance arts: theater, dance, opera and the public events. It enables certain students to go on to work for cosmetics brands and to give demonstrations at their sales outlets.

The course is based on three principles: theory, techniques and practice.
The student goes through the phase of learning to the phase of practicing, then to that of creation. It is this process that will enable him to evolve in the professional world.

The progression takes place step by step with a team of thirty professional instructors working in the business: chief make-up artists, hairdressers, prosthetic make-up artists, costume designer, directors of photography and so on. They come to transmit their know-how to the students. The make them aware of the imperatives of the profession and prepare them for its future evolutions (digital imagery for example).

Training to become a professional make-up artist requires more than 500 hours of practical make-up work (natural or sophisticated make-up) for cinema, studio work, fashion shows, period make-up, special effects, face and body painting, character creation for the theatre…), around 340 hours of general instruction, relating to cultural and artistic subjects (drawing, painting, modeling, the history of costume, make-up and art, masks and accessories, dermatology, cosmetology, etc.) along with 18 weeks of trainee placements.
