     BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST  / Student curriculum  / Options year 2

Special effects with prosthesis (SFX)

More and more cinema or TV productions call on special effects techniques (SFX). Certain of these effects fall in the domain of make-up. From the classical Cyrano de Bergerac nose to the sophisticated Warriors, as soon as an actor is required, it’s a make-up artist who applies and links together the attributes which transform the character.
Sometimes, it is also the make-up artist who has designed and made the prosthesis. One speaks in this case of a prosthetic make-up artist. But, most often, these are made by specialized workshops. In this case, the make-up artist works with the director on fine-tuning the characters, then applies his make-up. It is not rare for the application to last several hours for just a few minutes screen time. The special effects with application of prostheses relate to a particular know-how that is demanding and creative. It is a profession within the profession.

ITM trains all of its students in light special effects. Those who wish to go further can do so in the SFX specialization module.
The objective of this class module is to enable student make-up artists to understand the artistic process leading to the creation of special effects. It is also to enable them to acquire knowledge of the techniques and materials most commonly used to create these effects.
The aim is to initiate the students to the profession of the prosthetic make-up artist. They work from taking a molding to the production of a prosthesis in collaboration with a specialized workshop. They thus have the opportunity of working with such specialists again. Certain students find their career path in this field….
